An American Cancer

“The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. Thomas Jefferson

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess of the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” — Sir Alexander Fraser Tyler
(I always thought Thomas Jefferson said this, but it appears not . . .)

Not only is this happening in politics, but also in our courts. People are using lawyers to extract large sums of money from businesses and their fellow citizens to the detriment of us all. This is another symptom of the often short-term thinking that plagues our country. ‘As long as I get mine . . . others be dammed!’ What do you think? Are there any other cancers that should be stopped in America? How do we do it?
